Architect in charge: László Mikó
Project description
Netizen Hotel/Hostel Athenaeum
The building is located in Budapest downtown, along a main
traffic axis.
It was completed as a publishing and printing house in 1898.
As result of the reconstruc-tion the facade values destroyed during World War
II – the spear statue of the epony-mous Pallas Athena – were restored. The top
floor mosaic pictures made by Miksa Róth have been also renovated.
The functional change covers the entire building without
changing it’s floor area, structur-al and circulation system. The volume of the
building was increased with the conversion of part of the attic into mechanical
space.
The existing main staircase, as the most valuable part of
the interior of the building, has been renovated in it’s original condition.
The courtyard is covered by a modern, low-angle glass roof instead of the
previous glass roof.
On the upper floors single-layer, heat-insulating glazed
windows with the same decora-tion and color as the original were installed on
the street facade, while plastic windows were installed in the inner courtyard.
Two-storey aluminum portals were made on the facade overlooking the arcade.
The 434-bed Netizen Hotel / Hostel, operated by Russian
investors, includes traditional hotel rooms and group accommodation with bunk
beds.
